Vol. 217 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Dance Halls.

50.

asked the Minister for Justice (a) the number of dance halls in the County Borough of Dublin, including the built-up area immediately surrounding it, (b) how many of these sought occasional licences in each of the last five years, (c) the names of each of the dance halls that secured such a licence, and (d) if he will state in respect of each ballroom the total number of such licences granted in each of the last five years.

The available statistics relate generally to the police administrative area and the reply is on that basis. The reply is in the form of a tabular statement which, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, will be included in the Official Report. It does not, however, include the names of the dance halls concerned as it would be contrary to practice to publish officially the names of persons or firms concerned in court proceedings.

Following is the statement:

*The figures for the years 1960 to 1963 relate to the Dublin Metropolitan Division, which corresponded roughly with the County Borough and the Borough of Dún Laoghaire. For the year 1964, the figures relate to the extended police area known as the Dublin Metropolitan Area which includes most of County Dublin and part of County Wicklow.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of ballrooms attached to hotels or licensed restaurants in the County Borough of Dublin and the Dublin Metropolitan District; how many of these sought special exemption orders in each of the last five years for dances at which a substantial meal (a) was served, and (b) was not served; and if he will state in respect of each ballroom the total number of such licences granted in each of the last five years.

For the years 1960 to 1963, the available statistics relate to the Dublin Metropolitan Division, which corresponded roughly with the county borough and the Borough of Dún Laoghaire. For the year 1964, the figures relate to the extended police area known as the Dublin Metropolitan Area which includes most of County Dublin and part of County Wicklow.

At present, there are 38 ballrooms attached to hotels or licensed restaurants in the Dublin Metropolitan Area. In the course of the last five years, special exemption orders were granted in respect of 34 such ballrooms. It would be contrary to practice to publish officially the names of persons or concerns engaged in court proceedings, but the total figures for each of the years 1960 to 1964, inclusive, are as follows:

Exemption Orders for dances at which a substantial meal was served: 649, 541, 534, 550 and 943.

Exemption Orders for dances at which a substantial meal was not served: 370, 367, 387, 12 and 8.
