Vol. 218 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Commemoration of 1916 Rising.

6.

asked the Taoiseach if he will consider the establishment of an all-Party Committee to examine the arrangements to be made and to make recommendations for the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the 1916 Rising.

As I said in reply to a question addressed to me in this House on the 6th May, I invited a number of persons, who were associated with the events of the time, to serve on an informal committee, under my chairmanship, to assist in the consideration of the form of the ceremonies and celebrations to be arranged for next year to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1916 Rising.

The committee consists, at present, of 21 persons and is assisted by five sub-committees. A general programme for the commemoration was approved by the committee and published at the end of July.

I do not consider that it is necessary or desirable to duplicate the work of this committee by another committee comprised of representatives of political Parties, as envisaged in the question, but if the Deputy desires that members of his Party should have an opportunity of meeting the secretary of the Commemoration Committee, to learn details of the arrangements in progress or to put forward ideas regarding the ceremonies, this can be arranged.
