Vol. 219 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - UN Peace-keeping Operations.

15.

Mr. O'Leary

asked the Minister for External Affairs what his proposals for the mandatory financing of UN peace-keeping operations would entail for this country by way of annual contribution; and whether he proposes to bring the plans of the Irish delegation on UN peace-keeping operations before the House at an early date.

The Government's proposals for the mandatory financing of future UN peace-keeping operations are incorporated in draft A/SPC/L 121 REV I, a copy of which has been placed in the Library.

The resolution does not propose an annual contribution for UN peace-keeping operations and the amount payable by Ireland to any peace-keeping operation would depend upon its total cost.

The Government would be prepared to arrange for a discussion of the whole subject after the Christmas recess if it is so desired by the leaders of the Opposition.

The whole resolution has gone up the spout now, has it not?

According to yesterday evening's news, was not this resolution rejected?

The resolution is referred to the Peace-keeping Committee. Contrary to what the Deputy has said, I think the moral value of the efforts made by the Minister for External Affairs is very considerable and has highlighted the necessity for an operation of this kind.

But the remains are being removed to the Peace-keeping Committee.
