Vol. 219 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Agricultural Representation on NIEC.

3.

(South Tipperary) asked the Taoiseach if, with a view to facilitating the implementation of an incomes policy, he will now consider agricultural representation on NIEC.

I have dealt with the question of representation of agriculture on the National Industrial Economic Council on a number of previous occasions, the most recent of which was my speech on 10th November last in reply to the Dáil debate on the economic situation. The Government recognise the arguments in favour of this development and the way has been left open for it from the beginning. Certain practical difficulties of arranging adequate farming representation within a reasonable number of members would, of course, arise but these are not insuperable. If farming interests are prepared to accept membership, the Government will be prepared to arrange for appropriate changes in the constitution of the Council.
