Vol. 219 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Division of County Galway Estate.

115.

andMr. Donnellan asked the Minister for Lands if the Land Commission will consider acquiring the Buckley Estate, Renville, Oranmore, County Galway with a view to dividing it between the farmers in that area.

Last year the Land Commission interested themselves in part of this 235 acre property, exclusive of the substantial buildings and oyster fisheries, but agreement with the owner did not then materialise. Just now I am unable to indicate what further action may be feasible.

Is it the intention of the Land Commission to acquire this holding?

The Land Commission have endeavoured to come to agreement about portion of the holding. There are a number of very large buildings and a fishery on part of the holding which would not be suitable for Land Commission purposes and there has been failure to reach agreement with the owner so far.

Would the Minister give an assurance that he will look into this further? I take it he will agree that the oyster beds are practically non-existent. They are very muddy and the oysters are not of a type used at festivals.

They are not of the type the Minister eats.

I do not know whether the fact that they are used at festivals improves the oysters. The point is that the fishery is of no benefit to the Land Commission. Neither are the buildings. The question of whether the Land Commission will succeed in coming to agreement for the portion of the land in which they are interested is a matter for the Land Commission and I cannot say at the moment whether they will succeed.

Could they not transfer the oysters?
