(a) The figures for 1959 and later years are not directly comparable with those for 1958 and earlier years because, from 1 October 1958, that part of the Great Northern Railway Board's transport activities within the State was amalgamated with CIE.
(b) In the records available for 1961 and earlier years, all railway staff (irrespective of grade) in receipt of salaries above a specified annual level are grouped together. This annual level is £500 for 1945 and 1946; £650 for 1947-1951; £700 for 1952-1954; £1,000 for 1955-1961. Other railway staff in the grades indicated, with salaries below the specified levels, are shown according to grade. For years subsequent to 1961 all administrative, managerial etc. staff, irrespective of salary, are grouped together. The 1961 figures have been given on each basis.
