Vol. 220 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Safety of New Drugs.

63.

Mr. O'Leary

asked the Minister for Health whether he has seen the statement by the Director Designate of the British Post Graduate Medical Federation that present arrangements were too haphazard to provide the best possible protection to the public against the untoward consequence of new drugs; and whether he is satisfied that present arrangements are satisfactory in this respect.

Mr. O'Malley

I have seen the statement referred to by the Deputy. That statement referred to the position in Britain and it would be inappropriate that I should comment on it. So far as this country is concerned, I have already indicated to the House that I propose to set up a special body with certain functions relating to the safety of new drugs. The steps for the setting up of this body are in train.
