36.

asked the Minister for Education what proposals he has under consideration at present for improvements in buildings, conditions, educational courses, etc., in the reformatory and industrial schools.

I have had under consideration recently the position of these schools. As part of my consideration of the matter, I have had a number of discussions with conductors of some of the schools with a view to achieving certain re-organisation. As the whole matter is at a preliminary stage I do not feel warranted in making any detailed statement in regard to it.

asked the Minister for Education the number of (a) reformatory and (b) industrial schools in operation at present; and if he will state in each case (i) the location of the school, and (ii) the number of children detained there and their ages.

There are three reformatory and 42 industrial schools in operation at present.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to give the remainder of the information sought in the form of a tabular statement, which will be circulated with the Official Report.
