Vol. 220 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tourist Earnings.

11.

asked the Taoieach the percentage of earnings from the tourist industry for 1965 which is attributed to emigrants returning home on holidays.

It is not possible to compile estimates of the receipts from emigrants returning home on holidays since such persons are not distinguished in the Sample Passenger Card Inquiry which is used to estimate receipts from visitors. The categories distinguished in the Inquiry in respect of persons travelling to this country via Britain and the Six Counties are "tourist", "visit to relatives", "business" and "other". Not all the receipts from persons visiting relatives should necessarily be attributed to emigrants returning home on holidays while some persons classifying themselves as "tourists" may have emigrated from this country. Particulars of the receipts in each of the above categories in 1964 are given in an article in the March 1965 issue of the Irish Statistical Bulletin. Corresponding data for 1965 are not yet available.
