Vol. 221 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sheep Exports to Continent.

31.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if, in view of the increase in the number of sheep in the country, he will explore the potentialities of exporting sheep to the Continent of Europe.

My Department and the exporters concerned already maintain close contact with potential Continental markets for sheep and lambs, whether live or in carcase form. So far as import restrictions permit, the fullest advantage is taken of any market opportunities offering in Continental countries and in trade negotiations with these countries every effort is made to secure improved outlets for our exports.

In view of the fact that we have an adverse trade balance with every country in Europe, would the Minister not think it a good idea if he could send sales representatives to try to sell more agricultural produce in those countries and so correct our balance of payments?

We have an agricultural attaché on the Continent.

In London only.

We have one in Belgium who does Germany as well.

Can they not roam over the other countries?

Yes, they can.

We have a roving ambassador.

He is at home at the moment.
