Vol. 222 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Expenses of Central Statistics Office.

19.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will explain why the estimates for travelling and incidental expenses of the Central Statistics Office have increased from £11,560 in 1965-66 to £24,050 in 1966-67 as stated in the current Book of Estimates.

The provision for travelling and subsistence expenses has been increased to meet the cost of enumeration in connection with the taking of a Census of Population in 1966. The estimate for incidental expenses is up by £50 due to advertising in connection with the same Census.

Are these expenses not provided for already in the Estimates for Public Services? It says they have been increased from £72,000 to £90,000, for fees and expenses in connection with the Census for 1966. The sum of £77,000 was provided for already in the Book of Estimates. The Minister says this increase was necessitated by virtue of the Census?

That is true.

Does the Minister not think that these expenses have been duplicated?

No. If the Deputy would like a specific reply he should put down another question.

I will put down another question to elicit a detailed answer.
