Vol. 223 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dingle Fishing Industry.

31.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if it is the intention of his Department through an Bord Iascaigh Mhara to develop the fishing industry in Dingle by the provision of adequate cold storage facilities and processing operations.

I am informed by An Bord Iascaigh Mhara that they have no plans for the provision of such facilities at Dingle. As I informed the Deputy on 24th November, 1965, the Dingle Fishermen's Co-operative Society was at that time preparing an application to An Foras Tionscal for a grant towards the cost of providing fish processing facilities. These plans included cold storage facilities but the Society has not yet submitted its application.

Does the Minister not think it is about time something by way of definite development should take place in Dingle, in view of the fact that practically the largest fleet in Ireland is there, with over 30 boats in operation? It is time something was done. An Bord Iascaigh Mhara should be got to realise the position. It is their duty to see that the fishing industry in Dingle is sufficiently developed.

A fairly good speech.

The Deputy had to do something after the Presidential election in Kerry?

Mr. O'Malley

In Kerry?

You did badly there.

He lost a sheaf of votes.

He did badly in Kerry.

(Interruptions.)

What Dublin does today, Ireland does tomorrow.
