Vol. 223 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cavan Cottages.

6.

(Cavan) asked the Minister for Local Government when he received an application from Cavan County Council to sanction erection of a cottage for Mr. Laurence Comiskey of Kill, Kilnaleck; and when he proposes to issue sanction.

7.

(Cavan) asked the Minister for Local Government if he has been asked by Cavan County Council to approve of a tender for the erection of a labourer's cottage for Mr. Edward Reilly of Gallonbane, Crosserlough PO; if so, when; and when he proposes to approve of the tender.

I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 6 and 7 together.

The proposals to accept tenders for these cottages were received in my Department on 11th March last. I am not in a position to say when a decision on them will issue. I am, however, reviewing the position in County Cavan specially. There were tender proposals before my Department for two cottages, only, when the housing capital allocations were calculated and the county council's provisional allocation for new works was, therefore, very small. I hope to make a supplementary allocation in the near future which will enable the council to proceed with the building of a substantial number of additional cottages.

(Cavan): Would the Minister bear in mind that these two applicants are very badly in need of rehousing and have been on the waiting list for quite a while?

I am aware of that. If this further supplementary allocation is made in the very near future, I can see no reason why these cottages should not go on, but it will be a matter for the council. On the examination of tenders which has already taken place, we would have no objection to them.

(Cavan): Is the Minister in a position to say if this supplementary allocation will be made in the next week or month?

Within the next two weeks.
