Vol. 223 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Newcastle (Dublin) Building Site.

14.

asked the Minister for Local Government the date on which he received an application for sanction to the purchase of a building site at Newcastle, County Dublin; and when he expects to be in a position to give sanction.

On 13th October last Dublin County Council applied for sanction to the purchase under section 82 of the Local Government Act, 1946, of 36 acres of land at Newcastle, Co. Dublin, for general development including housing. Section 82 covers advance acquisition where the local authority have not determined the purpose for which the land will be used. The acquisition of land for housing development specifically is not subject to my approval.

The proposal submitted has been the subject of correspondence with the county council and is at present under technical examination in the Department in the light of additional information submitted on 16th May. I cannot say at present when a decision will be reached.

Is the Minister aware there is grave danger of losing that site because one man wants to sell, and that is the only effective entry to the site? If it goes, there is no other possible site.

As far as I can, I shall try to avoid that.
