Vol. 223 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Catering Services

50.

asked the Minister for Justice whether the amounts of food, etc., necessary for catering purposes in the Garda training centre, Templemore, County Tipperary, are put out to public tender with the necessary advertisements in the press; and, if not, if he will state fully the methods used in purchasing these supplies and the reason why they are not put out to tender.

51.

asked the Minister for Justice what steps are taken to ensure that essential supplies for catering services at the Garda training centre, Templemore, County Tipperary are purchased at the most economic rates and used to the best advantage in providing a varied and nutritious diet for Gardaí resident in the centre; and what general control his Department operates over these catering services.

52.

asked the Minister for Justice whether a mess committee was set up in the Garda training centre, Templemore, County Tipperary with a view to improving the standards of catering and generally expressing the views of the resident gardaí on catering matters; whether this committee was disbanded; if so, at what date and for what reasons; whether the committee has since been reconstituted; and who in the centre has the duty or right either to set up such a committee or to disband it.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 50 to 52 together.

The food purchased for catering purposes at the Garda Training Centre is not paid for out of public funds and, in consequence, the matter is not one in which I have any function or responsibility.

If any member of the Force affected by the messing facilities in the Training Centre disagrees with the arrangements, he may make representations direct to the officer in charge or through his Representative Body to the Commissioner.
