Vol. 223 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment in Footwear Industry.

1.

asked the Taoiseach the numbers employed in the footwear industry at present.

The total number of persons engaged in establishments classified to the boot and shoe (wholesale factories) industry for Census of Industrial Production purposes is estimated at 6,200 in mid-March, 1966.

Did the Parliamentary Secretary say the manufacturing and wholesale branches?

The boot and shoe wholesale factories industry.

I am not trying to catch the Parliamentary Secretary out but does he know what a wholesale factory is?

I imagine they are small shoemaking establishments throughout the country which are wholesale.

These figures do not relate to the shoe factories?

They also cover self-employed shoemakers?

They are omitted then?

asked the Taoiseach the number of footwear employees now unemployed or on half-time.

The number on the Live Register at mid-May, 1966, in the industrial group, manufacture of boots and shoes (factory), was 891. Particulars by industry are not available for short-time workers.
