Vol. 225 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fallen Leaves Traffic Hazard.

39.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that fallen leaves are the cause of many motor accidents at this time of year; and if he will issue warnings to the public in the most appropriate way.

The statistics on road accidents and the experience of the Garda and the road authorities do not indicate that fallen leaves are a significant factor in road accidents. I shall, however, consider including mention of this possible hazard in any appropriate road safety propaganda material issuing from my Department.

May I point out to the Minister that, if these authorities to which he referred are not aware of leaves being the cause of accidents, they should be made aware of it. Certainly, at this time of the year leaves are a great hazard.

I said that these authorities and the statistics do not bear out this contention, although I am inclined for once in my life to agree with the Deputy and say that leaves do constitute a hazard.

When they are a few weeks on the road and become slippery.

Where the roads are not swept.

There will be a few fallen leaves on the far side in the next week or so.
