Vol. 225 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fencing of Mayo Lands.

53.

asked the Minister for Lands if his Department will undertake the fencing of lands in their possession at Ely Bay and Aughleam, Blacksod, County Mayo, when rearrangement is being undertaken.

I presume that the Deputy is referring to the proposed partition of an extensive mountain commonage at Ely Bay and Aughleam. The position is that a number of tenants have applied to the Land Commission under the Land Acts for partition of the lands in question which are held in common. The relevant statutes are section 24, Land Act, 1939; section 25, Land Act, 1950; section 23, Land Act, 1953, and section 41, Land Act, 1965. Considerable progress has been made in the formulation of a draft scheme of partition. Pending finalisation of the scheme, it is not possible to say what provision, if any, will be made therein for the fencing of the lands.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary give special con sideration to the people of this neighbourhood because land is very scarce there? The people concerned are very small holders with low valuations. May I ask for special consideration by the Minister's Department in dealing with this whole question, because of the unusual circumstances?

I shall bring the Deputy's comments to the notice of the Minister.
