The number of surveys carried out under the aegis of my Department over the past nine years is 27. With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate in the Official Report a list of these surveys. The purpose of each survey is indicated by its title.
It is estimated that the number of recommendations contained in the reports is in the region of 350. Roughly a quarter of these are contained in reports recently submitted and these are under examination by my Department. Their implementation will in some cases involve legislation. It may be taken that, in the majority of cases, the principal recommendations contained in the earlier reports have already been implemented in whole or in part or have been taken into account in formulating policy under the Second Programme.
The amount of time and expense which would be involved in a more detailed analysis of the recommendations as well as in estimating the total cost of these surveys would be considerable and would not, in my opinion, be justified.
