Vol. 225 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Registry Staff.

94.

asked the Minister for Justice what steps are being taken to increase the staff in the Land Registry to cope with the arrears of work there.

Because of difficulties in the recruitment of established legal assistants, I arranged to fill all the vacancies in this grade by temporary appointments. A fresh competition is now in train which I hope will enable me to fill these posts on a permanent basis.

I have recently succeeded in having all vacancies in the clerical grades filled from current competitions. The addition of a small number of clerical posts is, however, required to deal with the growth in current work and I am arranging for the filling of these posts at an early date.

With regard to the mapping grades, recruitment difficulties that have persisted up to now will be overcome by new competitions that are being organised at present and I am confident that all the Land Registry's requirements of mapping staff will be filled from these competitions.
