Vol. 225 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fitzwilliam Street (Dublin) Offices.

6.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power at what date it is expected that the new offices at Fitzwilliam Street will be completed and ready for occupation.

The work at present being carried out at Fitzwilliam Street is limited to consolidating the site by constructing the foundations and basement to ground floor level. No date has yet been set for the completion of the building and this will be considered in the light of the exigencies of the public capital programme.

Is it the position that after the demolition of these Georgian houses in a vandalistic fashion, the Government do not know when, if ever, these offices will be provided? Is it a fact that it is impossible to say that we will see offices there in our lifetime?

The Deputy is exaggerating the position. The building of the offices will be carried out in conjunction with the absolute need for premises for the staff and it will be proceeded with when capital is available. It will certainly be in the Deputy's lifetime, if he keeps his good health.
