Vol. 225 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shannon Net Fishermen.

43.

andMr. Coughlan asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware that it is proposed to forbid net fishermen in the lower Shannon to fish inside the low water mark, with the result that on many occasions they will not be able to fish close to the shore where the fish are normally in greater supply; and that many of these men are solely dependent on fishing for a livelihood and have a hereditary right of net fishing in the Shannon; and if he will now take steps to ensure that these fishermen are not thus deprived of their hereditary rights.

I will bear the Deputies representations in mind in considering the report of the Public Inquiry held on the 1st November, 1966, in regard to certain fishery matters on the River Shannon.

Will the Minister make the report available to the public?

The first thing I would like to do is to see it myself. After I have seen it, the Deputy might ask me about it.
