Vol. 227 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Walkinstown (Dublin) Improvements.

28.

asked the Minister for Local Government the difficulties which Dublin County Council have experienced in acquiring the land necessary to provide a roundabout at Walkinstown Cross, Dublin; what proposals have been made to overcome those difficulties; whether the council will provide in the area alternative accommodation for any persons who may be dispossessed from their dwellings; and, if so, when and where such accommodation will be provided.

The difficulty experienced by Dublin County Council in relation to the provision of the roundabout at Walkinstown Cross arises from the reluctance of the owner of a house and land required for the scheme, to vacate the premises. Offers of monetary compensation agreed at arbitration and of alternative housing accommodation have been refused. It is understood that the county council are now negotiating for the acquisition of a site nearby for the purpose of erecting a house for the landowner concerned. Pending completion of these negotiations the council are not in a position to say when this accommodation will be provided.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state, with reference to a reply of 1st March, when Dublin County Council first applied to the Electricity Supply Board for an estimate of the cost of providing improved public lighting on Cromwellsfort Road, Walkinstown; the present state of negotiations between those bodies; when there is likely to be an outcome to the negotiations; and how long thereafter it will be before the work of improving the lighting commences.

I understand from Dublin County Council that a quotation for the work in question was first sought from the ESB in March, 1963. That quotation, and subsequent alternative proposals received from the ESB, were considered by the county council to be unsatisfactory either by reason of the inadequate standard of lighting to be provided thereby or because of excessive cost. The council still have the matter under consideration and are not in a position to indicate when the work will be undertaken.
