Vol. 227 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Car Assembly Industry.

48.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether any negotiations are proceeding between the motor assemblers, their principals in Britain and the Government concerning the future of the car assembly industry; and whether there are grounds for confidence in the success of the industry.

I would refer the Deputy to what I said in reply to a question on this matter on 9th February, 1967, from which it is clear that the answer to the first part of the question is "yes." In regard to the second part of the question, I naturally hope that the negotiations will be successful.

Has the Minister any further information of these discussions? Is there any suggestion arising at this moment in time that certain factories on this side will close down as tariffs are progressively reduced?

No, there is no such suggestion.
