As the Deputy is no doubt aware, fairly detailed information about the Civil Service staffs of Departments is given in the Directory of State Services and the Book of Estimates. The latter publication shows that the authorised staff for my Department for the financial year 1966-67 was 555.
In fact, excluding messengers, cleaners, etc., of whom there were 80, the civil staff of the Department on the 28th February, 1967, comprised 424. The number in the Civil Defence Branch was 55, and the number in those sections dealing with pensions and allied matters was 73. The staff of the Establishment Section, which deals with the administration of the Department generally, was—again excluding messengers, cleaners, etc.—65. It may be taken that the great majority of the remaining 231 were, broadly speaking, dealing with the Defence Forces but it would not be practicable to segregate those dealing with the FCA and other classes of the Reserve Defence Force.
The number of personnel of all ranks in the Permanent Defence Force on 28th February, 1967, was 8,415. The effective strength of the FCA was 18,016. There were also 1,521 civilian employees attached to units of the Permanent Defence Force. The number of pensioners of all classes, including recipients of special allowances and other periodic payments, was 23,656.
