Vol. 228 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unqualified Dentists.

45.

asked the Minister for Health whether his attention has been drawn to a statement from the dental association to the effect that it is essential that only trained and fully qualified dentists deal with the public, because among the obvious advantages, there is always the possibility that early cancer can be detected by the qualified dentist; and whether his Department are aware of any situation where unqualified dentists are dealing with the public.

I have seen the statement referred to by the Deputy. My Department are not aware of any unqualified persons who are dealing with members of the public, except to the extent that dental repair shops may repair dentures for individuals. It is illegal for any person to practise dentistry unless he or she is a registered dentist or a registered medical practitioner, and the Dental Board have power to prosecute offenders.
