Vol. 228 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Sligo Vested Holdings.

35.

asked the Minister for Lands why owners of vested holdings are precluded from enlarging their holdings when lands are being distributed by the Land Commission whereas holders of non-vested holdings are not so precluded; and if he is aware that a person (particulars supplied) whose land adjoins an estate in County Sligo which is being distributed and who is married with a family of ten, may not qualify because two portions of his land are vested, while a single person with a non-vested holding may qualify.

It is not correct to say that the owners of vested holdings are precluded from having their holdings enlarged on the distribution of acquired estates. The claims of all local uneconomic holders receive the fullest consideration by the Land Commission and it is immaterial whether their existing holdings are vested or unvested.

The estate referred to by the Deputy comprises some 40 acres which will be utilised to facilitate the rearrangement of a number of fragmented holdings in the locality. This rearrangement has not yet been effected and in the meantime the needs of the person mentioned will be investigated and fully assessed by the Land Commission.
