Vol. 228 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Care of Blind Children.

20.

asked the Minister for Education the names and personnel of organisations within the State catering for the care and training of blind children, their functions and sources of income.

Mr. O'Malley

I have no information about such organisations other than the two schools which are recognised as schools for blind children. These schools, which are situated in Dublin, are conducted by religious communities.

Both schools cater mainly for residential pupils for whom they receive maintenance grants from the local authorities. In addition to the grants payable to ordinary national schools by my Department, the schools for the blind are given grants for the purchase of special equipment for the training of blind children.

The function of the school is to provide basic education and training for blind and partially sighted children.
