Vol. 228 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bandon CIE Goods Store.

2.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he is aware that CIE have refused to grant permission to Cork County Council to purchase their goods stores in Bandon; and that by this action Bandon will lose an industry which is vital to the area; and if he will take some action on the matter.

I have been informed by CIE that they require the goods store at Bandon for their own purposes and it is not therefore for sale.

Will the Minister tell the House for what purpose or purposes CIE need these stores?

They need the stores for the overnight parking of buses and the mail car, and also for the further extended overnight parking of buses to be used in the school transport scheme. They also require them because apparently commuter traffic from Bandon is increasing.

Is the Minister aware that for the past 15 years buses have been parked in the open there? Suddenly CIE decide it is necessary to have parking facilities just when Bandon is on the verge of getting a factory which it needs badly because of the recent closing of another factory there. I would ask the Minister to do everything in his power to ensure that CIE will reconsider what I consider to be an inhuman decision.

How would the Deputy describe the decision which caused the unemployment in Bandon?
