Vol. 228 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Allocations to Local Authorities.

7.

(South Tipperary) asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state in respect of 1966-67 (a) the total amount collected by local authorities in respect of car taxation; (b) other income arising from road traffic such as licences, fines etc.; and (c) the amount distributed in toto to local authorities for roads and bridges.

The total amount collected by local authorities in respect of vehicle licence duty in the year 1966-67 was £9,504,000. The amount collected by local authorities in respect of driving licence duty and miscellaneous fees amounted to £612,000. The total of fines under the Roads Act, 1920 and the Road Traffic Act, 1961, collected by the Department of Justice and lodged to the credit of the Central Motor Tax Account was £217,000. Fees in respect of driving tests collected by the Department of Local Government and eventually lodged to the Road Fund amounted to £43,000.

The total amount paid to local authorities in respect of roads and bridges in the year amounted to £8,411,000. I would add that, out of the total collected a sum of £1,211,000 was retained by the Exchequer under the Finance Act, 1966, and substantial sums were required to meet "administrative expenses", including the cost of collection and enforcement.
