Vol. 229 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Factory Safety Committees.

19.

asked the Minister for Labour if he will take steps to amend section 73 of the Factories Act, 1955 so as to make it compulsory for all employers to set up meaningful safety committees in their factories.

Section 73 of the Factories Act, 1955 gives workers the right to set up safety committees which must be recognised and treated as such by the factory occupiers. I should be very glad if the workers and their trade unions took advantage of this section so as to ensure that safety committees are set up to a far greater extent than at present.

It is not my intention to amend the section of the Act as requested by the Deputy.
