Vol. 229 No. 7

Social Welfare (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill, 1967: First Stage.

Leave granted to introduce a Bill entitled an Act to amend and extend the Old Age Pensions Acts, 1908 to 1966, the Unemployment Assistance Acts, 1933 to 1966, the Widows' and Orphans' Pensions Acts, 1935 to 1966, and the Social Welfare Acts, 1952 to 1966.
—(Minister for Social Welfare)

I should like to take it tomorrow.

We shall have to see it first.

I shall give a draft copy this afternoon to the Whips. It is an important measure and it must be law before 1st August.

Why did you not introduce it earlier?

It is a Bill which entails a tremendous amount of amendment of other Acts and we have been working very hard on it.

Is it a long Bill?

Quite long: there are 17 sections.

Everything the Minister says makes it difficult to take it at 10.30 tomorrow morning.

It is largely a matter of amendment.

Let us see it. I know the Minister wants to have it before Wednesday. We are not all that stupid.

(Interruptions.)
Second Stage ordered for Thursday, 22nd June, 1967.
