Vol. 230 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Development of Jumbo Jets.

3.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether Aer Lingus have been asked to make any contribution towards the development of the Boeing jumbo jets; and, if so, if he will give details of the contribution.

The answer is "No".

4.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether any decision has yet been reached regarding the improvement and extension of existing passenger handling facilities at Shannon and Dublin Airports in preparation for the introduction of the jumbo jets; and, if so, if he will give details.

The improvement and extension of the passenger handling facilities, which will be necessary at Shannon and Dublin Airports to meet the requirements of Boeing 747 (Jumbo Jets) are at present under active consideration. I am not yet in a position to give details of the construction works which will be required.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary say whether or not a plan for extending the facilities at Shannon has been submitted to the Department by the Shannon Development Company? Is it a fact that the plan submitted by the company has been turned down by the Department, and, if so, why?

No. There is a long-term plan at present being prepared for Shannon, but, as far as I know, there has not been any question of anything being turned down. The position is such that full details are not yet available and are unlikely to be available for some months to come.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary indicate when a decision is likely to be taken and could he indicate the actual nature of the extensions necessary? When will information be available?

It is likely to be some months.
