Vol. 231 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions (Resumed). - Eviction of Invalid Lady.

11.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that an organisation (name supplied) proposes to evict an invalid lady (name and address supplied) whose father the former tenant of the house fought with the British Forces in World War II; and if he will take steps if necessary by the introduction of legislation, to prevent evictions in cases such as this.

I am not so aware. I have no functions in relation to the day to day operations of the organisation to which the Deputy refers, which was originally established to benefit exservicemen of the 1914-18 war.

The organisation was established under legislation passed in this country, Northern Ireland and by the British authorities who provided the capital from which the houses were financed and who have since, in consultation with the Government here, sponsored any legislation required to amend the trust under which the organisation operates. The question of further legislation for that purpose would be primarily a matter for them.

I want to refer first of all to an inaccuracy in my question. This refers to World War I but I had World War II in my question: I made a mistake there. The Minister has quite rightly stated that this trust for sailors and soldiers was established with the help of legislation of this House and I think there is a moral obligation on us to amend the legislation in order to stop the carrying on of what has happened with regard to this lady.

The Deputy must ask a question.

I am drawing the Minister's attention to the crime that has been committed with regard to this matter.

The Deputy may not make a speech.

(Interruptions.)

As I said, I have no function in this, but that does not imply approval of the action.

Wrap the green flag around me.
