Vol. 231 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions (Resumed). - Housing of Galway Army Personnel.

55.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware of the need to build houses for Army personnel at Galway; and what steps he proposes to take to meet that need.

The provision of houses for soldiers is primarily a matter for local authorities and a soldier has an equal claim on local authority houses with any member of the community in the same income group. The policy of my Department is to supplement the efforts of local authorities where the need is greatest and housing schemes have already been completed at a number of centres. It is not possible to say when new married quarters will be erected in Galway, but the needs of this centre will, as heretofore, receive full consideration in the light of the circumstances obtaining when a decision is being taken in relation to the location of the next housing scheme.
