Ceisteanna—Questions (Resumed). - Free Education School Facilities.

107.

asked the Minister for Education the minimum facilities that must be provided by the schools which have opted for the free education scheme.

In relation to the introduction of a minimum supplemental grant of £20 as from September, 1968, and a flat rate of £25 supplemental grant from September, 1969, to all schools opting for the scheme for the provision of free post-primary education there is a condition that the school authorities have reached or will reach a general level in their standard of educational facilities which satisfies me. This involves, particularly, the provision of a reasonably wide curriculum, improvement, where necessary, in the extent to which the authorised teacher quota is filled and provision of normal school equipment.

It is not possible to lay down hard and fast rules applicable to all schools in matters of this kind; the particular circumstances of each school must be considered.
