Vol. 232 No. 2
asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will give details of the price increases approved by him since 23rd November, 1967; and the commodities and services concerned.
176.
asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will list the price increases approved by him since devaluation; the number of applications made for such increases; if he will list the commodities investigated by private and public inquiries by prices advisory bodies set up by him during the second half of 1967; the number of bodies set up since devaluation; and the number of inquiries scheduled to take place in the near future.
I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 175 and 176 together and to circulate in the Official Report a statement showing price increases of which I have been notified and to which I have raised no objection since devaluation. The statement includes increases of which I had been notified before devaluation took place.
The number of notifications received since devaluation in compliance with price control requirements was 141 and many of these are still under investigation.
The answer to each of the remaining parts of Question No. 176 is "Nil".
Following is the statement:—

Is the Minister aware that merchants and shopkeepers claim that every invoice they have received in the past two or three months showed increased prices? Are all these manufacturers notifying the Department of the increases?
As far as I know, they are. On odd occasions we get complaints of increases which were not notified to us and we deal with these very promptly when we get them, but the number of such complaints is quite small.
Does the Minister think the number escaping the net is very small?
I can only go by the number of complaints, but I think the number escaping the net is small as far as I can see. The Deputy will be aware that we issue regularly lists of items on which increases have been authorised. If people have been making increases in prices that have not been authorised, it is relatively easy for the shopkeepers to check on this and report to the Department.
