Vol. 232 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin-Belfast Railway.

3.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether there have been any recent developments or negotiations in relation to a proposal that part of the Dublin-Belfast railway line be made single track; and if he will state the Government's policy in the matter.

I understand that the Northern Ireland authorities concerned have decided not to proceed for the present with the proposal to single the Portadown-Meigh section of the Dublin-Belfast railway line.

Can the Minister say when he received an indication that they would not proceed with the proposals?

I think it was in the course of the last month or two.

Were there any representations made by the Irish Government or by our transport authority to the North?

Yes, we were in touch with the Northern Ireland authorities.

I appreciate you were in touch but did you indicate your opposition to the proposals?

There were representations made.

Did they amount to opposition?

We suggested that it would not be in the interests of either the Six Counties or ourselves to have this operation carried out.
