Vol. 232 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Heating and Power Plant Surveys.

5.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will state in respect of each of the last five years the names of the individual firms and hotels which received grants towards the cost of technical assistance and expert consultants in the survey of heating and power plants and reduction of fuel costs; the type of fuel preferred by such consultants; and the total amount of such grants in each of the last five years.

Fifty-one firms received a grant towards the cost of technical assistance in the survey of heating and power plants and reduction of fuel costs. With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report the names of the firms who received the grants and the total amount of the grants paid in each of the last five years.

The consultants are concerned with all aspects of the efficiency of the heating plants surveyed and their reports do not indicate a preference for any particular type of fuel as such.

Following are the firms:

I wonder if the Parliamentary Secretary can give us some information relating to the last two words he used "as such"? Has there not been a majority of recommendations for a particular type of fuel, and if so, what is that fuel?

I have not got the particulars on the majority of recommendations as such. I do know that in fact in six cases there was a question of a changeover—in four cases, from coal to oil, and in two cases, from turf to oil.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary say whether this consultancy service is available to hospitals?

I cannot say—certainly not within the ambit of my Department.

Can we take it that it is going to be Government and Fine Gael policy that native fuel is not to be used for heating in future?

No, that is only Coalition policy.

The Minister cannot answer for Fine Gael policy.
