Vol. 232 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - River Drainage.

23.

asked the Minister for Finance if there are any plans in his Department for the drainage of the catchment areas of the Lung, the Suck and the Shannon; if so, what they are; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Lung river is in the Boyle catchment area which has been surveyed and a drainage scheme is at present being prepared for it. As the Suck is closely bound up with the Shannon flood problem, it has been decided that a scheme for it must await developments in relation to the main stem of the Shannon. The engineering survey of the Shannon drainage problem for the purpose of preparing a scheme has begun.

24.

asked the Minister for Finance when the survey of the Owenmore-Arrow catchment area in Sligo started; if it is yet completed; if not, when it will be completed; if he will give this scheme a high priority on the arterial drainage list because of the high incidence of emigration and lack of employment opportunities in the area; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The engineering survey of the Owenmore-Arrow Catchment commenced in 1963 and it is hoped to have the greater part of it completed by the end of this year. It is yet too early to say when works may start because the scheme when designed will have to be put on exhibition and the other requirements of the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945 must be complied with.
