Vol. 232 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Knifing Offences.

25.

(Dublin South Central) and Mr. Andrews asked the Minister for Justice the number of persons charged with knifing offences in each of the past three years; and the number convicted in each of the past three years.

Persons are not charged with "knifing offences" as such. The offences may be recorded as murder, attempted murder, causing grievous bodily harm, wounding, assault, and so on. Knifing offences are not recorded separately in the criminal statistics and, accordingly, the figures asked for are not available.

The Garda authorities say that while offences involving the use of knives get strong publicity nowadays they have no reason to conclude that there has been an appreciable increase in stabbing offences in the years in question.
