Vol. 233 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Provision of Traffic Lights.

48.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the urgent need for the installation of a set of traffic lights at Temple Hill, Blackrock, County Dublin; and if he will investigate the possibility of providing traffic lights at this dangerous intersection.

The provision of traffic light signals at this junction is a matter for Dún Laoghaire Corporation acting at the request, or with the consent, of the Garda Commissioner. I understand that there are no proposals for traffic lights at the junction, and that the corporation are designing a scheme for the improvement of the junction, involving channelizing islands but not traffic lights. I am having the Deputy's representations brought to the notice of the corporation and the Commissioner.

49.

asked the Minister for Local Government if there are any proposals before his Department regarding the erection of traffic lights at Cemetery cross and Moneenageesha cross, Galway; if so, the date on which such proposals were received; and if he will explain the delay in granting the necessary sanction.

Galway County Council were advised in December, 1966, that there was no objection in principle to Road Fund assistance towards suitable proposals for traffic lights at these junctions. Subsequently the council submitted to the Department on 25th April, 1967, an application for sanction to the acceptance of a tender for the supply of light signals at the intersections. The application contained in effect details of the council's proposals for control of the intersections.

The detailed design of traffic control arrangements for an intersection on a busy rural or suburban route is a complex matter, and in particular it is necessary to ensure that the total arrangements, including the design of the traffic islands and channels, are such as to ensure the best results from the point of view of accident reduction. Accordingly, in this case it was considered necessary to institute a study of the junctions and in particular of the accidents that have taken place there over a period. This study is practically completed. When it is completed, it will be possible to give a decision on the traffic lights proposed.
