Vol. 233 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Reform of Primary School System.

8.

asked the Minister for Education whether there are any plans at present under consideration for the reform of the primary school system, to accompany the improvements in the secondary school system.

The primary school curriculum is at present under review both in relation to its scope and content and having regard to recent developments in teaching methods and techniques. The proposals emanating from this review will be submitted to the various teaching and managerial bodies. After the necessary consultations have taken place the revised curriculum will be announced. Steps already taken towards improving the education being given in primary schools include the provision of libraries in all these schools.

Is there any intention of reviewing the situation whereby in certain parts of the country, notably Dublin, there are classes of 60 and 70 pupils per teacher? This is really what I was getting at in the Question. Obviously, in this situation, the pupils cannot get any minimum education.

If the Deputy puts down a question on the matter, I am sure he will get an answer.

Obviously, it comes under the heading, the Minister will agree, of reform of primary education?

The Deputy will get an answer if he puts down a question relating to that matter.
