Vol. 233 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

12.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has sanctioned the provision of a sewerage scheme for Glantane village, Mallow, County Cork; and, if not, why.

Proposals for a sewerage scheme for Glantane, Mallow, were submitted to my Department by Cork County Council on 24th November, 1967. Having regard to the relatively high unit cost of the scheme and to the fact that alternative methods of sewerage disposal seemed more appropriate for the area, the council were requested to reconsider the proposal. A further submission in the matter has been received in my Department from the county council and is being examined.

13.

asked the Minister for Local Government when the Dodder Valley sewerage scheme, County Dublin will be started; when it will be completed; and what are the stages when the various areas will be serviced by this scheme.

Tenders for stages 1 and 2 of the Dodder Valley Drainage Scheme have been received by Dublin County Council and it may be expected that work thereon will start shortly. These two stages provide for the construction of a sewer running from Waldron's Bridge, Orwell Road, to Tallaght. The council envisage that the work will take about a year to complete.

As the remaining stages of the overall scheme are still in planning it is too early to say when they are likely to be commenced.

Could the Minister say if these two stages will reach Belgard Road?

I could not say for certain but I imagine they will serve part of it.

14.

asked the Minister for Local Government when he expects that sewerage services will be available in the Ballymount, Clondalkin and Palmerstown areas, County Dublin.

I am informed that sewerage services are already available in certain parts of the areas referred to by the Deputy and that Dublin County Council are at present investigating the possibility of extending these facilities. I could not say at this stage, however, when additional services are likely to be available.

Does this mean that there is in fact no programme for the canal sewer at present?

The scheme has not been finally designed yet.

15.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has received proposals from Clonmel Borough Council for the provision of a new sewerage scheme; if so, if he will give details of this scheme; and when he will give sanction to these proposals so that this much-needed scheme may be implemented without delay.

Preliminary proposals for a scheme of sewerage extensions for Clonmel have been received in my Department. The scheme will cater for the Garrymore, Baron Park, Ard Fatima, St. Patrick's Road, and adjoining areas, together with Powerstown Road and Irishtown.

Further technical data to enable the proposals to be fully considered are awaited.

Is the Minister's Department awaiting the information from the Clonmel borough authority or is it within the Minister's ambit to proceed to approve the scheme?

The consulting engineer has undertaken to have a set of plans of the scheme submitted to the Department and they are still awaited.

16.

asked the Minister for Local Government if his Department received proposals from Kerry County Council in connection with the provision of a piped water scheme for the Inch-Castlemaine district; and, if so, what is the present position regarding these proposals.

Contract documents for the Inch regional water supply scheme and preliminary report on the Castlemaine regional water supply are under consideration in my Department.

Both schemes, together with a number of other regional water supply schemes in County Kerry and elsewhere, are included in the review of regional schemes generally which is at present being carried out by sanitary authorities throughout the country. A decision thereon must await the outcome of that review.
