Vol. 233 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Foot and Mouth Outbreak.

6.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will comment on the new outbreak of foot and mouth disease in England; and whether he is contemplating reintroducing more stringent precautions here to prevent the spread of the disease.

There has been a recurrence of foot and mouth disease on some farms in Britain which had previously been infected and were in process of restocking. Apparently some traces of virus still remained on these farms, following the original outbreaks.

While this is naturally disappointing, the cases in question appear to be isolated ones which do not represent a new spread of the disease. In fact, cases of this kind were not wholly unexpected.

Stringent precautions are still in operation here against the introduction of the disease into this country and the position is being kept under close and constant review.
