Vol. 234 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Carcase Beef Exports.

12.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he has had negotiations with his opposite number in Britain with a view to increasing the quota of 25,000 tons of carcase beef for export to that country.

There is no quota or limit on the quantity of carcase beef which can be exported to Britain. Under the Free Trade Area Agreement, the British Government make payments equivalent to the average guarantee payment under their Fatstock Guarantee Scheme on 25,000 tons of Irish carcase beef per annum. During my discussions over the past year or so with the British Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, I raised the question of an increase in this quantity on which support payments are made by the British Government but the British Minister was unable to agree to any increase.
