Vol. 234 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Corporation Sub-Tenants.

28.

asked the Minister for Local Government the total number of persons living as sub-tenants in Dublin Corporation housing units.

I am informed by Dublin Corporation that they have on hands applications for rehousing from 2,725 families, comprising 9,251 persons, living as sub-tenants in corporation houses. Of the 2,725 families, 2,034 have been approved for rehousing and more than half of these could be offered accommodation almost immediately if they were prepared to waive preferences for particular areas which they have expressed.

What happened the others? Are they not being considered for housing? The Minister mentioned one figure as being approved by the corporation or on a priority list for housing—would he state what happens all the others?

They are not approved for rehousing by the corporation.

But they are sub-tenants in corporation houses and that is why they are seeking accommodation?

They may not be in need of accommodation.

As sub-tenants in corporation houses?

They may not. It is quite possible.

Would the corporation be satisfied that sub-tenants in small corporation houses would not be in need of rehousing?

The house may still not be overcrowded.

With two families in the same house, it might not be overcrowded?

There might not be two families.

How could a house like this be subdivided between two families and not be overcrowded?

There might not be any children involved. There might be only one of the original family there.

That would be one family.

It is not a family in the context of there being children. There could, in fact, be only three people in some of these houses.
