Vol. 235 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Membership of EEC.

1.

asked the Taoiseach if he will make a statement on the present position regarding Ireland's application for membership of the EEC in view of the present unrest in France and other EEC countries.

At the meeting of the Council of the European Communities on the 19th December last it was decided that the applications for membership of the EEC, including that of Ireland, were to remain on the Council's agenda.

The matter was considered at subsequent meetings of the council, including the most recent meeting held on the 30th May. Further consideration at this stage of the questions arising out of the applications for membership is likely to be delayed in consequence of the fact that a general election is now pending in France and new Governments have yet to be formed in Belgium and Italy following the elections in those countries.
