Vol. 235 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Occupational Injuries.

28.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number of days lost last year owing to occupational injuries.

It is estimated from the claims recorded in my Department that between 1st May, 1967, when the Socal Welfare (Occupational Injuries) Act, 1966, came into operation, and the 31st March, 1968, approximately 603,000 days were lost owing to incapacity due to occupational injury or disease. This figure would include cases where injury or disease occurred prior to the 1st May, 1967, and incapacity continued, but would not include odd days of incapacity which did not give rise to claims to benefit. The day on which an accident occurs is treated as a full day of incapacity where work is not resumed.

I hope the Minister for Industry and Commerce will give consideration to the factory inspectors' report for the year ended 30th September, 1967.

The Minister for Labour.

I hope he will give consideration to the report. It is a serious indictment.

It has a bearing on occupational injuries.

It is the responsibility of another Minister.

29.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare whether he has yet completed his negotiations with the British authorities concerning a reciprocal arrangement to cover occupational injuries insurance; the number of Irish and British citizens respectively who it is expected will be assisted by such an arrangement; and how soon he will make a statement on the outcome of negotiations.

Action in this matter has not yet concluded and I am not in a position to give details relating to the proposed arrangement.
