The position with regard to road accidents revealed in the Garda Returns year after year could not be regarded by any right-minded person as other than disturbing. For this reason every effort has been made in recent years to create a greater public awareness of the problem facing the country in this regard. In the year 1967 there was more intensive promotion of road safety than ever before and I am satisfied that in so far as official action is concerned the maximum is being done, having regard to the resources available. But I would stress that, no matter how intensive official campaigns may be, the greatest contribution to road safety can still be made through the realisation by individual members of the public of their responsibilities while using the roads.
I would also remind the Deputy of the other steps being taken, including the proposals for legislation at present before An Seanad.
